Electric Wires in the Sky & Trolleybuses in San Francisco

Electric Wires in the Sky & Trolleybuses in San Francisco

When I first moved to San Francisco in 2009, I was very bothered by the “ugly wires” that ran above the streets. Teeming with a strong electric current, these wires power a fleet of zero emission MUNI trolleybuses. Now, I consider them a part of the City’s charm.

Buddha, Beer, Buses, Bridges & Boats in Laos

I came across the tranquil country of Laos in the middle of a nine month backpacking adventure and just after spending a long time in the hustle-bustle of Thailand. In my travel journal, I referred to it as a “welcome return to the Third World.”

Soaring High Above New York City on an Aerial Tramway

Soaring High Above New York City on an Aerial Tramway

Imagine soaring above the New York City skyline in an aerial cable car every day to get to school. That’s how I spent my childhood growing up on Roosevelt Island: a two mile long and 800 foot wide sliver of land in the East River sandwiched between Manhattan from Queens.

Beer, Hitchhiking From Mad Max’s Disney Castle and Other Germany Tales

Before there was a site, Adventures of a GoodMan was an e-mail I sent out to friends during my travels with links to snapfish albums for photos. The story featured in this post was one of those e-mails after a solo-backpacking trip through Bavaria, Germany, in 2006. I was 26.

Open For Interpretation: What is a Vessel

What do you think of when you hear the word vessel? For me, the first thing that pops into my mind is transportation followed shortly after by something that stores something. With that in mind, here are 10 of my favorite vessel photographs.

Travel Back in Time on San Francisco’s Historic Streetcars: Photo of the Day

Travel Back in Time on San Francisco’s Historic Streetcars: Photo of the Day

Regardless of where I’m heading in San Francisco, I always try and find a way to take the historic F line streetcar. A lover of the rails since my father and I first set up a Lionel train in my childhood bedroom, I think these rolling museums may be my favorite part of the city.

Sri Lanka Train Photography

I know I’ve said it many times before in this blog, but if you don’t know it, I love trains. My father and I built a model train town on a balsa-wood table when I was growing up and I’ve loved the rails ever since. So Dad, these train pics …

A Party on my Delayed MUNI Bus

A Party on my Delayed MUNI Bus

NextMuni.com says my bus arrives in 18 minutes and the next one comes in 32 minutes. Next I check it’s 9 minutes and 23. Then the ETA jumps up to 12/18…then 13/16…and finally 4/4. By the time I get to my stop, both buses are pulling in together. Just another …

Sleeper Buses, Open Tickets and Cyclo Taxis

As always, trying to get information on traveling like a local from locals was like pulling teeth. For those who managed to actually get on a local bus they had to face super inflated prices, dangers and the occasional incident with police. Fortunately, for once we weren’t trying to travel …

Tuk Tuks and AC Buses in Cambodia

Tuk Tuks and AC Buses in Cambodia

The primary way for both tourists and locals to get around the country is via air conditioned bus. These range from deluxe first class to ones where the AC barely works. Either way, there is not much to write about these as anyone who has ever taken a long distance …

Getting Around Laos in Flatbed Trucks, Buses, Boats, Rikshaws and More

The advantage of taking one of these AC minivans or comfy first class buses is that they pick …

Leaving the Full Moon Party is an Adventure Too

We spent the night dancing and having a blast before going to bed at around 8am. Reuben returned. Karen came back. But where was Claire? This was the question we were still asking at 7pm when I hopped onto the back of a motorcycle driven by a Thai friend I …

If You Don't Understand Me, Don't Just Say OK

Our final stop in Sri Lanka was the beach town of Hikkaduwa, though it was unlike I have ever been to. The main highway is also the town’s one road with a row of restaurants and guesthouses separating that road from the ocean. Mostly a surfer’s destination, the waves crashing …
