Excerpt: Germans don't jaywalk in Germany; even if there are no cars coming they will all just stand there: it's very weird. I drank beer in places where Hitler tried to stage revolts before taking power. There's a crazy permanent wave in the middle of Munich where people surf all year round. I got stuck on a train from Holland to Germany because they couldn't properly "convert to the German power source." Their solution was to switch tracks and try to "jump start the power while moving."

Excerpt: Dancing and singing down the middle of this aisle are what appeared to be court jesters dressed in black-face...straight out of an old movie or something. Many of the children in the crowd have also painted their faces black and some were even in full costume. Up above the crowd on the town hall balcony are more black-faced people with microphones saying things in Dutch and getting the crowd excited.

Excerpt: Instead, the horse wants to cross the river up ahead and keep walking…farther and farther away from civilization and any road or location that I recognize. I continue to pull and kick and yell at the horse, but he has a mind of his own. So before I know it, I am on a path in the backwoods of Nicaragua with a horse that doesn’t like me…my still-crummy Spanish…the equivalent of 20 cents...and Chap Stick.

Excerpt: Carrie and I came up with plans if her organization evacuated her from the country and I had to get home on my own. I was ready to take as much money out of the bank as possible in case I had to bribe any officials to get out. We were envisioning situations where we would be in separate hotels in Managua with no way to communicate and pretty much getting ready for the worst case scenario, as we had no way to know what to expect.

Excerpt: One plan to move the boat was to use branches and logs to wedge under the boat and pry it into the air to move it a foot at a time. Another featured digging trenches in the sand under the boat and filling it with water to make it float. All of this creativity helped move the boat at most ten feet, a fact that sounds impressive until you learn that the water receded at least 20 feet that during the same time period.
