I am so fascinated with this island, especially how it has changed so much. The history is so interesting. I did not know all this had happened to the island. I knew it as Welfare Island. I was born in NY, raised as a child in Flushing in the 50′s, now known as China Town, and left Merrick L.I. in 1970 for TX so I missed all the changes. Thank you for your marvelous pictures. What a lovely place it has become.

      Hi Dodie,
Thanks so much for your kind words. Yeah, it really is an extremely special place that’s been through so many iterations over it’s existence. Have you had the chance to visit there recently? It’s really a marvelous place…especially in April when the cherry blossoms are out.
