Photographing A Wild Leopard Two Feet From My Face
While on a nature safari in Yala National Park, Sri Lanka, I came face to camera lens with several leopards. This particular one seemed to have no fear as he walked right up next to our jeep, sniffed around and went about his business.

Sigiria: An Ancient Sri Lankan Rock Fortress
Located in Sri Lanka, Sigiria is an ancient rock fortress and palace ruin surrounded by the remains of an extensive network of gardens, reservoirs, and other structures…as well as a potentially-fictional hornet’s nest that doubles as a bribe-inducing scam.

Let There Be Light…and Sunflares
“Light” is the theme of this week’s Digital Photography School challenge. The subject is left completely up for interpretation, so I present a selection of my favorite images featuring that giant ball of light in the sky. I’ve always loved shooting cranking up my shutter speed and pointing my camera directly at the sun to capture the deep blue skies and bold rays.

Sri Lanka Train Photography
I know I’ve said it many times before in this blog, but if you don’t know it, I love trains. My father and I built a model train town on a balsa-wood table when I was growing up and I’ve loved the rails ever since. So Dad, these train pics …

5,200 Steps to Get to Eden
Depending on which legend you believe, Adam’s Peak is either the original location of where Adam was exiled from Eden, the spot where Buddha left his footprint en-route to paradise or where butterflies go to die. In any case, pilgrims from around the world have flocked there for more than …

Avoiding the Fighting that Never Was
After climbing Adam’s Peak we began our two day journey to Arugam Bay, located on the politically unstable east coast of the country. We had been told that it was amazing, untouched, completely safe and a must-see destination. However, on the first night off our journey while staying in Ella …

Leopards, Elephants and Prisoners Two Feet From Our Face
Located on the Southeast corner of Sri Lanka, Yala National Park is supposedly the best place in the country to see leopards, elephants and scores of other animals in their natural habitat. So, after our time in Ella we headed to Tissamaharama (Tissa) and booked an overpriced safari with high …

I Was at Galle Before it Got All Touristy
Constructed by the Portuguese in the 1600′s and later taken over by the Dutch then the British, Galle Fort is a cute colonial town reminiscent of Antigua, Guatemala. It is surrounded by sturdy brick walls and filled with European architecture, narrow streets, little houses and shops, churches, cafes, friendly people …

If You Don't Understand Me, Don't Just Say OK
Our final stop in Sri Lanka was the beach town of Hikkaduwa, though it was unlike I have ever been to. The main highway is also the town’s one road with a row of restaurants and guesthouses separating that road from the ocean. Mostly a surfer’s destination, the waves crashing …

Sri Lankan People and Smiles Galore
Everywhere Carrie and I went in Sri Lanka we were greeted by smiles and cries of “hello!” The locals seemed genuinely excited to see us, as if they had only encountered a handful of foreigners in their lives. While I doubt this to be true, there are still few enough …
