Canadian Fisheye Smile // Photo of the Day

One of my favorite parts of owning a fisheye lens is playing around with the way it distorts the curves of a scene. Straight lines become semi-circles and horizons turn into smiles.

This particular shot was taken in Canada on the Toronto Beach during a vacation with my wife Carrie. I love how the curve of the fisheye lens, along with the windows and door of the lifeguard hut, makes the photograph look like a smiling face. Well, at least to me…

Four years ago, I purchased both a Nikon 70-300mm zoom lens and a 10.5mm fisheye lens. The idea was to try them both out and return one. I chose the zoom, but Carrie told me that I had to keep the fisheye too. In the time since, it’s become my favorite lens. Thanks, Carrie!

Also, a special thanks goes out to Rock the Shot Forum for considering this image for their July Photo Challenge. Best of luck to me :)

Thanks Irina! If you’ve always wanted one, what better day than today to start having fun with one :) As for the beach, it was in The Beachs area of Toronto. Just came across it while wandering around near the friend’s house that I was staying in.
