GUEST POST OVERVIEW: Let me start by saying that I am in love with Munich. It’s a beautiful city, filled with incredible architecture, history, and beer. I actually visited the city as a stopping point for a trip to Castle Neuschwanstein, but loved it so much that I stayed for a week. So, to give both you and me a reason to go back, here’s a new post by my friend Daisy!

When it comes to the most Christmassy of countries, Germany takes the biscuit (or the lebkuchen). Think little markets, lots of gingerbread, and plenty of glühwein. Here are 7 things you must do and see on any trip to Munich this winter:

 . . .

Christmas Markets

The biggest Christkindlmarkt is in the Marienplatz, but if you’re looking for something a bit different, visit the medieval market at Wittelsbacher Platz. Traditional gospel choirs perform regularly, among the medieval-looking stalls selling authentic fare and wares.

The Royal Residence

If you’re looking to ogle things that sparkle, this is the place to do it. Jam-packed with all manner of trinkets and treasures, the Royal Residence is a must visit. During December, there is a Christmas Village in one of the courtyards, selling all sorts of beautifully made gifts and traditionally constructed toys. And the kids can visit St. Nikolaus, though they might not recognize the Germanic version of Father Christmas!

. . .

Englischer Garten

So Munich can’t promise you a white Christmas, but if you’re lucky enough to get a bit of snow in the winter season, there’s nowhere prettier to see it that Englischer Garten. Wander through internationally themed areas, like the Japanese tea house and a Greek temple, and find some space to make snow angels or a snow ball fight. And if you’re feeling brave (or like you’d enjoy a dose of pneumonia) there’s even a place you can relax in the nude.

. . .

Frauenkirche

Christmas carols are never as good as they are in a beautiful old church. And Munich’s Church of Our Lady is the best setting for listening to some traditional Christmas music. There are plenty of services in December where you can listen to music for free, but if you want the best, get yourself a reasonably priced ticket for one of the regular concerts.

Ice Skating

For most of the winter, Munich’s Karlspatz Square is taken over by a giant outdoor ice rink. A perfect daytime activity for the family, or an amusing evening outing for the adults, there’s nothing quite like getting your skates on for feeling wintery. And when you’re tired and wet from having spent most of the time on your bottom, warm up with a glühwein from one of the stalls near the rink.

. . .

Outside Swimming

In winter? Really? Absolutely – the Dante Winterbad is a specially designed Munich, Germany, attraction just for when the temperature plummets. The steamy waters will keep you toasty, and there are Jacuzzi jets to pummel you into relaxation. If all that Christmas chaos has got you stressed, this is the perfect place to unwind.

BMW Museum

If you haven’t written a Christmas list yet, don’t worry – go for a wander around this museum stuffed with boys toys and insanely cool gadgets and you’ll end up with a  list longer than your arm. Ok, so most of the things on it might not be in Santa’s price range, but there’s no harm in a little Christmas dreaming, is there?
